foundation for the current reform efforts in mathematics education: (1) "The
Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics" (1989) presents
recommendations for improving and updating the mathematics curriculum and the
evaluation of students' achievement.

Standards for Teaching Mathematics" (1991) offers specific suggestions for how
mathematics teachers can create successful learning environments for every
student and promote their own professional growth. (3) "The Assessment Standards
for School Mathematics" (1995) describes ways to have a comprehensive
mathematics assessment program and provides criteria for judging the quality of
mathematics assessment.
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has released a draft of updated Standards, entitled "Principles and Standards for School Mathematics" at http://www.nctm.org/standards2000/. You can download the draft from the web. JOURNALS"Educational Studies in Mathematics"
This journal presents new ideas and developments of major importance to those working in the field of mathematical education. It reflects both the variety of research concerns within this discipline as well as the range of methods used to didactical, methodological and pedagogical subjects, rather than with specific programs for teaching mathematics. http://www.wkap.nl/journalhome.htm/0013-1954 "Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics" FOCUS is an interdisciplinary journal, edited jointly by the Research Council for Diagnostic and Prescriptive Mathematics (RCDPM) and the Center for Teaching/Learning of Mathematics (CT/LM). The objective of FOCUS is to make available the current research, methods of identification, diagnosis, and remediation of learning problems in mathematics. http://www.wcnet.org/~rcdpm/focus.html "For the Learning of Mathematics" This journal aims to stimulate reflection on mathematics education at all levels, and promote study of its practices and theories: to generate productive discussion; to encourage inquiry and research; to promote criticism and evaluation of ideas and procedures current in the field. "Journal for Research in Mathematics Education" An official journal of NCTM, JRME is devoted to the interests of teachers of mathematics and mathematics education at all levels. It publishes reports of research, including experiments, case studies, surveys, and philosophical studies; articles about research, including literature reviews and theoretical analyses; brief reports of research; critiques of articles and books; and brief commentaries on issues pertaining to research. http://www.nctm.org/jrme/ "Journal of Computers in Mathematics & Science Teaching" JCMST offers an in-depth forum for the interchange of information in the fields of science, mathematics, and computer science. "Mathematical Cognition" The journal provides a forum for research on mathematical cognition from diverse fields of study, including advances in the study of mental representation and the uses of mathematical concepts, and their development in children. "Mathematics and Computer Education" This is an independent, refereed journal, internationally indexed and abstracted, and devoted to critical evaluation and dissemination of articles; development of materials for the improvement of classroom effectiveness in the first years of college, and encouragement of high academic standards. http://www.nsiweb.com/mcejournal/default.html "Mathematics Educational Research Journal" This is the official journal of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia, Inc. It is an international, refereed journal which provides a forum for the publication of research on the teaching and learning of mathematics at all levels.
