Information Sources for Mathematics Education. ERIC Digest.
In this information age of instant access to libraries, databases,
information centers, organizations, government agencies, and self-appointed
experts worldwide, where do you turn for accurate, reliable, and up-to-date
information about mathematics education? There are many competing voices hoping
to influence the practices and policies of teachers, schools, parents, and
administrators, so it seems important to have confidence in one's sources of
information. Listed here are some of the key information sources used by
parents, researchers, and other professionals. There are many more local,
regional, national, and international resources not listed here, but these are
reliable starting points in your quest for information.
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
As the primary professional organization for teachers of mathematics in
grades K-12, the NCTM provides broad national leadership in issues related to
learning and teaching of mathematics at all levels. Professional development
opportunities are provided through regional and national conferences, and
through publishing journals, books, videos, and software.

TERC is a nonprofit research and development
organization committed to improving mathematics and science learning and
teaching. TERC is internationally recognized for creating innovative curricula,
fostering teacher professional development, pioneering creative uses of
technology in education, contributing to educators' understanding of learning
and teaching, and developing equitable opportunities for underserved learners.
NCTM's three Standards documents laid the
foundation for the current reform efforts in mathematics education: (1) "The
Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics" (1989) presents
recommendations for improving and updating the mathematics curriculum and the
evaluation of students' achievement.
http://www.enc.org/reform/journals/ENC2280/280dtoc1.htm (2) "The Professional
Standards for Teaching Mathematics" (1991) offers specific suggestions for how
mathematics teachers can create successful learning environments for every
student and promote their own professional growth. (3) "The Assessment Standards
for School Mathematics" (1995) describes ways to have a comprehensive
mathematics assessment program and provides criteria for judging the quality of
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has released a draft of
updated Standards, entitled "Principles and Standards for School Mathematics" at

"Educational Studies in Mathematics"
This journal presents new ideas and developments of major importance to those
working in the field of mathematical education. It reflects both the variety of
research concerns within this discipline as well as the range of methods used to
didactical, methodological and pedagogical subjects, rather than with specific
programs for teaching mathematics.
"Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics"
FOCUS is an interdisciplinary journal, edited jointly by the Research Council
for Diagnostic and Prescriptive Mathematics (RCDPM) and the Center for
Teaching/Learning of Mathematics (CT/LM). The objective of FOCUS is to make
available the current research, methods of identification, diagnosis, and
remediation of learning problems in mathematics.
"For the Learning of Mathematics"
This journal aims to stimulate reflection on mathematics education at all
levels, and promote study of its practices and theories: to generate productive
discussion; to encourage inquiry and research; to promote criticism and
evaluation of ideas and procedures current in the field.
"Journal for Research in Mathematics Education"
An official journal of NCTM, JRME is devoted to the interests of teachers of
mathematics and mathematics education at all levels. It publishes reports of
research, including experiments, case studies, surveys, and philosophical
studies; articles about research, including literature reviews and theoretical
analyses; brief reports of research; critiques of articles and books; and brief
commentaries on issues pertaining to research.
"Journal of Computers in Mathematics & Science Teaching"
JCMST offers an in-depth forum for the interchange of information in the
fields of science, mathematics, and computer science. JCMST is the only
periodical devoted specifically to using information technology in the teaching
of mathematics and science.
"Journal of Mathematical Behavior"
This journal focuses on interventions that improve the teaching and learning
of mathematics and to help develop a deeper understanding of how people learn
and use mathematics.
The journal provides a forum for research on mathematical cognition from
diverse fields of study, including advances in the study of mental
representation and the uses of mathematical concepts, and their development in
"Mathematics and Computer Education"
This is an independent, refereed journal, internationally indexed and
abstracted, and devoted to critical evaluation and dissemination of articles;
development of materials for the improvement of classroom effectiveness in the
first years of college, and encouragement of high academic standards.
"Mathematics Educational Research Journal"
This is the official journal of the Mathematics Education Research Group of
Australasia, Inc. It is an international, refereed journal which provides a
forum for the publication of research on the teaching and learning of
mathematics at all levels.
"Mathematics in School"
"Mathematics in School" is published five times a year by the Mathematical
Association. A variety of articles on teaching and learning mathematics are
published, including activities, opinion articles, and lesson plans.
An NCTM journal devoted to improving mathematics instruction in grade 8
through two-year and teacher- education colleges.
"Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School"
An NCTM journal intended as a resource for middle school students, teachers,
and teacher educators. The focus of the journal is on intuitive, exploratory
investigations that use informal reasoning to help students develop a strong
conceptual basis that leads to greater mathematical abstraction.
"School Science and Mathematics"
This is the official international journal of the School Science and
Mathematics Association. The journal focuses on issues, concerns, and lessons
within and between the disciplines of science and mathematics in the classroom.
"Teaching Children Mathematics"
This is an NCTM journal that provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and a
source of activities and pedagogical strategies for mathematics education
pre-K-6. It presents new developments in curriculum, instruction, learning, and
teacher education; interprets the results of research; and in general provides
information on any aspect of the broad spectrum of mathematics education
appropriate for preservice and in-service teachers.
"Teaching Mathematics and Its Applications"
This journal provides mathematics teachers in secondary and tertiary
education with interesting and stimulating instructional materials.
